The young mother

buried the crockpot

behind the clutter

of cookware

she often used –

the nonstick omelet pan, the griddle,

the fancy blender that made smoothies, soup,

              and ice cream.

Life was moving too fast

to slow cook.

The old woman

buried the crockpot

behind the clutter

of cookware

she never used –

the turkey roasting pan, the tagine,

the fancy gizmo that promised to fry, steam, roast,

              make ice cream.

Time was moving too fast

to cook slow.
